Whitman College senior 萨尔玛Anguiano 和 alum Daniel 查尔顿 ’18 have been accepted into the 施瓦茨曼的学者 Class of 2023.

The select few hail from 33 countries 和 107 universities around the world—和 two of them are Whitties.

施瓦茨曼学者, they will join a one-year fully-funded master’s program in global affairs at Tsinghua University in Beijing.

查尔顿’s road to Beijing follows an early 和 evolving career centered on global health care issues 和 systems. 惠特曼毕业后, 查尔顿 implemented an 艾滋病毒-focused Project for Peace in Tanzania 和 then worked for one year as a Princeton in Africa fellow at the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative in the Kingdom of Eswatini, 世界上艾滋病毒感染率最高的国家.

查尔顿, 谁是从汤森港来的, 华盛顿, 现在在波士顿JSI工作, a public health management consulting firm that has implemented health system strengthening projects in 107 countries. He negotiates agreements with public 和 private donors ranging from USAID to the Bill & 梅林达•盖茨基金会, 为多边提案建立有组织的财团, 和 implements a $223 million portfolio of locally-led projects focused on COVID-19, 孕产妇健康, 艾滋病毒, 以及五个国家的数字健康. 查尔顿与埃塞俄比亚同事密切合作的经验, 自2020年11月以来一直卷入内战的国家, has revealed to him that the challenges facing health systems are interdisciplinary.

“I am cognizant that we must design international health systems 和 supply chains to withst和 not only outbreaks of infectious disease, 但也爆发了传统冲突,”他说. “同样, the disproportionate impact of climate change in low- 和 middle-income countries may lead to increased instability in fragile states, further complicating the delivery of essential health services—from immunizations to contraceptives—already impacted by the COVID-19 p和emic.”

查尔顿, 谁渴望制定卫生系统政策, says he was drawn to Schwarzman because of the opportunity to collaborate with an international set of young leaders committed to addressing some of the world’s most pressing 和 complex issues.

He is particularly enthusiastic about living in China since it will play a major role in financing 和 shaping the future of international health systems. 另外, after analyzing European Union public policy during a study abroad program in Germany, 查尔顿 hopes to better underst和 how China’s Belt 和 Road Initiative 和 COVID-19 vaccine diplomacy will impact the broader trajectory of global development.

Anguiano, the opportunity to study in China was the initial reason she decided to apply for 施瓦茨曼的学者—but it won’t be her first time doing so. She had recently returned from spending the summer of 2019 in China through Whitman’s 校外研究 faculty-led Crossroads program 和 was in New York City for a Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America career institute when she first learned about the scholarship.

After coming back from the study abroad program, I knew my future was in China,”她说.

移民的女儿, Anguiano’s own lived experiences 和 those of her family 和 朋友 at home in nearby Hermiston, 俄勒冈州, 迫使她为她的社区争取更好的条件和机会. 去年,她开始了一个个人项目, Protegiendo Nuestras Raices (保护亚虎娱乐官网pt的根), which advocates for fair compensation structures 和 protection for undocumented workers. 她现在开始写政治专业的毕业论文, which she says will focus on conditions for migrant 和 undocumented workers on a global spectrum, as well as the role personal narratives can play in shaping how these communities are perceived.

“The stories about our communities have always been formed 和 told by people outside of them,”她说.

The chance to hear diverse perspectives 和 learn from others’ lived experiences is key to her interest in 施瓦茨曼的学者.

I think that being in the classroom with students that come from different places

入围苏世民学者项目, applicants must submit a resume demonstrating their leadership abilities 和 academic aptitude, 还有两篇论文和三封推荐信.

She credits the experience as a large part of why the Schwarzman interview went well.

查尔顿 says he is equally elated to be admitted to 施瓦茨曼的学者 和 thankful for the clear guidance 和 constant support he received from family, 朋友, 和导师, 包括拉瑟和他的论文导师, 吉姆Russo, BBMB副教授.

“I believe that Professor 吉姆Russo’s Infectious Disease class embodies the central tenets of a liberal arts education. Although we would start each week analyzing the biochemical transmission pathways of a specific etiologic agent,

President Kathleen Murray says she takes immense pride in Anguiano 和 查尔顿, who both received 加勒特舍伍德奖学金 为了这一难得的成就而去惠特曼学习.

“The fact that we have two recipients in one year for such a competitive program is a significant honor for Whitman. I applaud their accomplishments thus far 和 foresee important 和 meaningful work ahead for each of them.”
